Scomi: 4-car trains on track

SCOMI Rail Bhd will deliver the first batch of four-car trains for KL Monorail to Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd by year-end.

Its unit, Scomi Transit Projects Sdn Bhd, won a RM494 million contract from Prasarana in November last year to supply 12 sets of four-car Generation 2-type trains for its KL Monorail fleet expansion.

The contract is also to upgrade the existing monorail stations as well as the electrical and mechanical system, and build a new depot.

Scomi to benefit from Brazil monorail job re-tender

Maintain buy at 43 sen with a fair value of 80 sen: The Edge Financial Daily reported yesterday that the 23.9km Tiradentes monorail project in Sao Paolo, Brazil has been re-tendered.

It was indicated that the Brazilian authorities had requested for a re-issue of the tender, with modifications such as less tight delivery dateline and better payment structure.

We think this is positive news, which gives Scomi Bhd (and its partner Almeida SA) another shot at the contract where we understand Bombardier was the favourite.

This project is worth US$35 million-US$40 million (RM110.6 million to RM126.4 million) per km or RM3 billion in total.

Notwithstanding that, as highlighted in our previous reports, the scale of planned monorail projects in Brazil is massive ' a total of 77km of monorail line is planned.

Even if Scomi were to miss out on the first line (Tiradentes), the group could still be involved in the remaining lines.

We understand two other tenders are coming up (i) Manaus ' 20km (Aug 9); and (ii) Sao Judas ' 21.5km (September)

Obviously, looking at the size of the Tiradentes contract (RM3 billion) ' assuming 45% stake in the JV with a net margin of 6%, Scomi's EPS for FY11F-FY12F would be boosted by 30%-35% (9.9 sen to 11.5 sen).

On the flipside, there would be some concerns on the operating environment in Brazil given the unfamiliar territory.

We maintain our buy rating on Scomi Group with an unchanged fair value of 80 sen per share based on a 5% discount to our sum-of-parts valuation of 84 sen per share.

We think Scomi Group is undervalued by the market due to'' (i) true enough earnings deliverance track record has been weak and (ii) concerns over political connections or lack of it currently; whereby it should benefit from the strong news flows for SEB and impending new rail jobs. Scomi To Complete One Train Every Month For Mumbai Monorail Project

RAWANG, June 21 (Bernama) -- Scomi Engineering Bhd, a subsidiary of Scomi Group Bhd, intends to complete and despatch a four-car monorail train monthly for its Mumbai monorail project.
Each four-car monorail can carry about 600 passengers.
President Syahrunizam Samsudin said after the successful trial-run of the first four-car monorail in Mumbai early this year, Scomi has been steadily working towards meeting the project's deadline next year.
"The first train will be sent next month. Sometime next week, this train will undergo static and dynamic testing before it goes on a complete circuit run under the close supervision of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority technical team," he told a media conference at the roll-out of the first four-car train for the project.
The project is a 20km route between Jacob Circle and Chembur in Mumbai, with one central depot and 18 user-friendly and highly-secured stations.
Scomi Engineering and its consortium partner, Larsen & Toubro, secured the RM1.846 billion Mumbai Monorail project in November 2008.
They were given 30 months to complete India's first monorail project for which Scomi had to deliver 60 cars for 15 sets of four-car trains.
The monorail cars are being built at Scomi's Engineering, Technology and Innovation Centre in Rawang.
Syahrunizam, who believed the Mumbai monorail contract was the start of a new chapter in Scomi's public transport business, said the project was a Malaysian icon as the cars were 100 per cent designed, built and delivered by Malaysia.
"We will ensure that by early next year, all the 15 sets of trains will be ready in Mumbai to begin trial runs before operations commence," he said.
